Room correction: what it does and which systems have it
The same soundbar is set up in very different rooms: open-plan or small, with bare walls or with curtains and a sofa, in a cabinet or on the wall. Room correction is the manufacturer's way to adapt the sound to that room. The comparison table has a Room Correction column and a filter for it. This guide explains what the feature does, with the manufacturers' own documentation as the source, and how to find the models that list it.
What room correction does
The manufacturers describe the same basic idea. The soundbar plays test sounds, a microphone picks them up in the room, and the system adjusts its sound to what it measured.
Sonos describes its version, Trueplay, like this: it measures how sound reflects off walls, furnishings and other surfaces in a room, then fine-tunes the speaker for where it has been placed. Bose says its ADAPTiQ audio room calibration optimizes the system's sound specifically to your room during initial setup. Sennheiser says the AMBEO Soundbar Max captures the characteristics of the living room and its reflective surfaces.
The main difference between the systems is which microphone does the measuring.
Sonos Trueplay
Sonos offers two ways to tune:
- Advanced tuning uses the microphone of an iOS device. You walk around the room with the phone while the speaker plays test sounds. Sonos says this takes about 3 minutes, and asks you to keep the room quiet, cover as much of the room as you can and not change the volume while it runs.
- Quick tuning uses the microphones built into the speaker. Sonos lists Arc Ultra, Beam Ultra, Era 100, Era 100 Pro and Era 300 for quick tuning, and it works from iOS or Android.
According to Sonos, Android devices cannot run advanced tuning, so on soundbars without quick tuning an iOS device is needed. Sonos also says Trueplay is supported by all Sonos products except Port, Connect and Roam SL, including surround setups and systems with a Sub. If you move the speaker or change its setup, Sonos recommends tuning again. EQ changes you make afterwards are applied on top of the Trueplay adjustments, and Trueplay can be switched off in the app.
Sonos soundbars in the table that list room correction include the Sonos Arc Ultra, the Sonos Beam Gen. 2 and the Sonos Ray.
Bose ADAPTiQ
Bose calls its system ADAPTiQ. On the Bose Smart Ultra Soundbar product page, Bose lists an ADAPTiQ headset in the box and describes the feature as calibration of the system's sound to your specific room, done during initial setup.
The headset is the measuring microphone, so this system does not depend on a phone. In the table, the What's in the box column shows a calibration microphone for the Bose Smart Soundbar 700, Smart Soundbar 900 and Smart Ultra Soundbar. See all Bose soundbars with room correction.
Sennheiser AMBEO calibration
Sennheiser describes an advanced room calibration for the Sennheiser AMBEO Soundbar Max, with sound adapted to the specifics of the living room. The calibration microphone is in the box. Sennheiser links the measurement to its 3D sound: the soundbar uses the room's characteristics and reflective surfaces together with virtualization technology developed with Fraunhofer.
Samsung SpaceFit Sound
Samsung's full manual for the HW-Q930B, HW-Q800B and HW-Q700B describes "Spacefit sound", which provides optimized sound quality by analyzing the listening space. It can be switched on with the soundbar remote, or through Adaptive Sound+ on a Samsung TV. The manual notes that the function works when the soundbar connects to some Samsung TVs, and that the Q700B supports only the TV method.
That dependency shows up in the table. Several Samsung models, such as the Samsung Q950A and the Samsung Q700A, show "Only with some Samsung TVs" in the Room Correction column instead of a plain yes.
Which soundbars have it
The Room correction filter in the table shows every model whose manufacturer lists the feature. See all soundbars with room correction. The filter works in both directions: soundbars without room correction lists the models where it is not listed.
The models with room correction come from Bose, Devialet, Harman Kardon, JBL, LG, Samsung, Sennheiser, Sonos, Sony and Yamaha. Some examples from the table:
The feature is not limited to the most expensive models. See soundbars under $500 with room correction.
What to check
- How it measures. A microphone in the box, a microphone in the soundbar, or your phone. With Sonos advanced tuning that means an iOS device.
- What it needs. Samsung's SpaceFit depends on the TV for some models.
- When to repeat it. Moving the soundbar or adding speakers changes the room response. Sonos tells you to tune again in that case.
For adding speakers later, see Expandable soundbar systems. For speaker layouts, see Soundbar channel numbers explained.
