Overview
The S40TR is a 4.1-channel home theater soundbar. The soundbar, a wireless subwoofer and two rear speakers come in the box, together with a remote, batteries and an optical cable. The black soundbar is 720 mm wide, 63 mm high and 87 mm deep.
The rear speakers connect to the soundbar wirelessly. They are wired up with the supplied speaker cable and need a power outlet.
Connections are an HDMI ARC port to the TV, an optical input, a USB port for music files and Bluetooth. There is no HDMI input and no Wi-Fi. You can control it from the remote, the buttons on the bar, the LG ThinQ app for iOS and Android, or an LG TV remote over SIMPLINK (HDMI-CEC).
What the specs mean
- 4.1 speaker setup: four main channels and one subwoofer channel, counting the included subwoofer and rear speakers. There are no height channels.
- HDMI ARC: the Audio Return Channel carries the TV's sound to the soundbar over one HDMI cable. There is no HDMI input, so there is no video passthrough.
- Audio formats: Dolby Digital, DTS Digital Surround and LPCM.
- Sound modes: AI Sound Pro, Cinema, Game and Standard. Night Time lowers the overall volume but raises soft sounds.
- LG TV features: WOW Orchestra plays sound through the LG TV and the soundbar at the same time (HDMI connection only). WOW Interface and TV Sound Mode Share are also listed.

|---|---|---|---|
| Overall value A rough features-for-the-price score, compared with every soundbar listed. Bars gain points for things like Dolby Atmos, Wi-Fi and room tuning, and lose points without them. Dolby Atmos with up-firing speakers earns more than virtual Atmos. Cheaper bars lose fewer points, or none, for missing premium extras (Dolby Atmos, HDMI eARC, up-firing speakers). 100 is the best deal listed. Based on specs only, not on how it sounds. | 39 | 47 | 49 |
| Price-band value Like Overall value, but each soundbar is compared only with soundbars in its own price band: up to $300, $300–500, $500–800, $800–1,200 or over $1,200. 100 is the best deal in that band. Based on specs only, not on how it sounds. | 53up to $300 | 64up to $300 | 66up to $300 |
