Overview

SN6Y is a 2020 LG sound bar with a separate wireless subwoofer. The bar is 1060 mm wide, 57 mm high and 85 mm deep, comes in black and can stand in front of the TV or be wall-mounted with the included bracket. LG suggests it for TVs from 49 inches.

LG lists 420 W of total power: two front channels at 80 W each, a 40 W center channel and a 220 W wireless subwoofer.

The TV connects over HDMI ARC or the optical input, and the bar has one HDMI input and one HDMI output, Bluetooth 4.0 and a USB port for music files. It works with the TV remote and the included remote, has touch controls, and LG lists an Android app for control. Sound modes include AI Sound Pro, which adjusts the sound to the content, Bass Blast and DTS Virtual:X. High-resolution audio is listed up to 24-bit/96 kHz.

What the specs mean

• 3.1 speaker setup: three main channels (left, center and right) plus a subwoofer, with no height channels. The center channel carries most of the dialogue.
• DTS Virtual:X: processing that creates virtual height and surround channels from the bar's front speakers, without extra speakers. The audio formats LG lists are LPCM, Dolby Digital and DTS Digital Surround; Dolby Atmos and DTS:X are not supported.
• HDMI ARC, not eARC: the Audio Return Channel sends the TV's sound to the sound bar over one HDMI cable and lets the TV remote control the bar. The newer eARC adds high-bitrate formats such as Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Atmos and uncompressed multichannel audio; SN6Y does not support eARC.
• HDMI input (HDCP 1.4): a source device can plug into the sound bar's HDMI input and the video goes on to the TV. LG lists the HDMI ports as HDCP 1.4, with no 4K or HDR passthrough listed, so a 4K HDR source is better connected to the TV directly.
• Wireless surround expansion: LG's SPK8-S rear speaker kit (sold separately) adds two rear speakers. The speakers are wired to an included wireless receiver, which connects to the sound bar without a cable; with the kit LG lists the system as 5.1 channels.
