Overview

The MagniFi Mini AX is a compact Polk Audio soundbar system that Polk announced in March 2022. The bar is 366 mm wide, 79 mm high and 104 mm deep and comes in black. It ships with a wireless down-firing subwoofer that, per Polk, can be placed up to 30 feet away.

Polk describes a five-speaker array in the bar: two 0.75-inch tweeters and three 2-inch drivers for the left, center and right channels. The subwoofer has a 5 x 7-inch woofer. Polk's SDA technology widens the soundstage, and a 3D Audio mode adds a virtual height dimension. Polk does not state a channel count (x.y.z) for the bar.

The TV connects over HDMI eARC or optical, and there is a 3.5 mm analog input, a USB-A port, Bluetooth 5.0 and Wi-Fi. Music streams over AirPlay 2, Chromecast built-in and Spotify Connect, and a Google Assistant speaker can send music to the bar. The bar has top-panel buttons, an OLED display and a remote. Polk's quick start guide says a TV, cable or satellite remote can control power, volume and mute, and the bar can learn a remote's commands. Polk also lists it as Roku TV Ready.

The box contains the bar, the subwoofer, the remote with two AAA batteries, the bar's power supply and power cord, the subwoofer power cord, an HDMI cable, the quick start guide, a registration card and a safety document.

What the specs mean

  • Speaker setup not stated: Polk lists the drivers (left, center and right channels plus a subwoofer) but no x.y.z figure, so the spec sheet shows "Not stated".
  • HDMI eARC: the enhanced Audio Return Channel carries the TV's sound, including Dolby Atmos, to the bar over one HDMI cable. The bar has no HDMI input, so there is no video pass-through.
  • Audio formats: Polk lists Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby Atmos, Dolby TrueHD, DTS, DTS-HD, DTS-HD Master Audio, DTS:X and DTS Virtual:X.
  • VoiceAdjust and Night Mode: VoiceAdjust raises dialogue over the rest of the soundtrack. Night Mode reduces bass and volume dynamics for low-volume listening.
  • Expandability: Polk's SR2 wireless surround speakers are sold separately. Polk says they add Dolby Atmos or DTS:X 5.1 playback.

Overall value
A rough features-for-the-price score, compared with every soundbar listed. Bars gain points for things like Dolby Atmos, Wi-Fi and room tuning, and lose points without them. Dolby Atmos with up-firing speakers earns more than virtual Atmos. Cheaper bars lose fewer points, or none, for missing premium extras (Dolby Atmos, HDMI eARC, up-firing speakers). 100 is the best deal listed. Based on specs only, not on how it sounds.
