S40T

Overview

The HW-S40T is a compact 2020 all-in-one soundbar from Samsung's S-Series. It is 680 mm wide, 68 mm high and 115 mm deep, comes in black, and can be wall-mounted; no wall mount kit is listed in the box.

It is a 2.0 system with no separate subwoofer. Samsung lists four speakers, a built-in woofer and a total power of 100 W.

The TV connects with the optical cable in the box. Bluetooth streams music from a phone, and Samsung lists Bluetooth multi-connection, so more than one phone can connect. The box also contains the remote control with batteries, the power adapter and cable, and the manuals.

Samsung lists three sound modes: Smart, Music and Standard. The bar is controlled with the included remote or the touch buttons on the bar, and Samsung lists One Remote Control support.

What the specs mean

• 2.0 speaker setup: two channels, left and right, with no subwoofer channel. The built-in woofer sits inside the bar.
• Optical input: the TV sends its sound over a digital optical cable. Samsung notes that a Samsung TV set to "Simultaneous Optical Output" sends the audio in PCM or Dolby Digital format.
• Audio formats: Dolby Digital, DTS Digital Surround and LPCM. Samsung lists the decoding as Dolby Digital 2ch and DTS Digital Surround 2.0.
• No HDMI: the HW-S40T has no HDMI connection, so there is no HDMI ARC control and no HDMI passthrough.
• Not expandable: no wireless subwoofer or rear speakers can be added.
