Overview
The True X Bar 40A (model SR-X40A) is a single-body Yamaha Dolby Atmos sound bar from 2023 with two subwoofer drivers built in. Yamaha announced the True X Series in July 2023 for sale in August/September 2023; its US page now lists the 40A as discontinued. The bar is 1015 mm wide, 63 mm high and 112 mm deep and can hang on the wall from built-in keyholes.
Yamaha lists two 2.6 x 1.8-inch front drivers, two 2-inch up-firing height drivers and two 3-inch subwoofer drivers, with 180 W of total output power (30 W each for the front, height and subwoofer pairs).
The TV connects over HDMI eARC or optical, and an HDMI input takes a console or streaming box. Wi-Fi, Ethernet and Bluetooth bring music, with Spotify Connect, TIDAL Connect and AirPlay 2, and Alexa is built in for voice control. Yamaha lists Clear Voice for dialogue, Bass Extension and the sound modes Stereo, Standard, Movie, Game and All, which plays sound from the bar and the True X speakers at an even volume.
You control the bar with the buttons on top, the included remote, the TV remote over HDMI-CEC, Alexa, or the Sound Bar Controller app for iOS and Android. The box contains the remote with its battery, the power cord, an optical cable, spacers, a mounting template and the guides.
What the specs mean
- Speaker setup not stated: Yamaha does not give a channel count for the True X Bar 40A, so the table lists it as not stated. The user guide describes front, height and built-in subwoofer speakers.
- Dolby Atmos: Dolby describes Atmos as sound that can be placed around and above you. The 40A's height drivers fire upward for that effect. It decodes Dolby Atmos, Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Digital Plus, Dolby Digital EX and multichannel PCM.
- HDMI passthrough: the HDMI input passes 4K video at up to 60 Hz with HDR10, HLG and Dolby Vision, and the user guide lists HDCP 2.3.
- HDMI eARC: HDMI.org describes eARC as the newer Audio Return Channel that carries high-bitrate formats from the TV to the bar.
- Expandable: Yamaha lists the True X Sub 100A wireless subwoofer and the True X Speaker 1A portable surround speakers as add-ons.

|---|---|---|---|
| Overall value A rough features-for-the-price score, compared with every soundbar listed. Bars gain points for things like Dolby Atmos, Wi-Fi and room tuning, and lose points without them. Dolby Atmos with up-firing speakers earns more than virtual Atmos. Cheaper bars lose fewer points, or none, for missing premium extras (Dolby Atmos, HDMI eARC, up-firing speakers). 100 is the best deal listed. Based on specs only, not on how it sounds. | 54 | 56 | 99 |
| Price-band value Like Overall value, but each soundbar is compared only with soundbars in its own price band: up to $300, $300–500, $500–800, $800–1,200 or over $1,200. 100 is the best deal in that band. Based on specs only, not on how it sounds. | 54$300–500 | 56$500–800 | 100$300–500 |
