Overview

The S20A is a compact 2.0-channel LG soundbar without a separate subwoofer. LG lists two 53 x 93 mm woofer units and a passive radiator. It comes with a remote and batteries. The black soundbar is 650 mm wide, 63 mm high and 99 mm deep.

Connections are an HDMI ARC port to the TV, a USB port for music files and Bluetooth. There is no optical input, no HDMI input and no Wi-Fi. You can control it from the remote, the buttons on the bar, the LG ThinQ app for iOS and Android, or an LG TV remote over SIMPLINK (HDMI-CEC).

What the specs mean

  • 2.0 speaker setup: two channels (left and right) and no subwoofer channel.
  • HDMI ARC: the Audio Return Channel carries the TV's sound to the soundbar over one HDMI cable. There is no HDMI input, so there is no video passthrough.
  • Audio formats: Dolby Digital, DTS Digital Surround and LPCM.
  • Sound modes: AI Sound Pro, Cinema, Game and Standard. Night Time lowers the overall volume but raises soft sounds.
  • LG TV features: WOW Orchestra plays sound through the LG TV and the soundbar at the same time (HDMI connection only). WOW Interface and TV Sound Mode Share are also listed.

Overall value
A rough features-for-the-price score, compared with every soundbar listed. Bars gain points for things like Dolby Atmos, Wi-Fi and room tuning, and lose points without them. Dolby Atmos with up-firing speakers earns more than virtual Atmos. Cheaper bars lose fewer points, or none, for missing premium extras (Dolby Atmos, HDMI eARC, up-firing speakers). 100 is the best deal listed. Based on specs only, not on how it sounds.
