Overview

HW-C400 is the entry model of Samsung's 2023 C-series soundbars. It is a single 2.0 bar with a built-in woofer and no separate subwoofer. The bar is 641 mm wide, 66.5 mm high and 107 mm deep. The manual describes wall mounting as optional; no wall-mount kit is in the box.

Samsung lists 4 speakers and 40 W of total power.

There is no HDMI port: the TV connects with an optical cable or over Bluetooth, and phones that support NFC can start a Bluetooth connection by touching the bar. A USB port plays music files. There is no Wi-Fi.

You can control it with the buttons on the bar, the included remote or the TV remote.

What the specs mean

  • 2.0 speaker setup: left and right channels, with the bass handled by the woofer built into the bar.
  • No HDMI: the bar has no HDMI ARC or eARC port, so TV sound comes in over optical or Bluetooth.
  • Audio formats: Dolby Digital, DTS and 2-channel LPCM.
  • Voice and night modes: Samsung lists Voice Enhance for dialogue and a Night Mode for late listening.

Overall value
A rough features-for-the-price score, compared with every soundbar listed. Bars gain points for things like Dolby Atmos, Wi-Fi and room tuning, and lose points without them. Dolby Atmos with up-firing speakers earns more than virtual Atmos. Cheaper bars lose fewer points, or none, for missing premium extras (Dolby Atmos, HDMI eARC, up-firing speakers). 100 is the best deal listed. Based on specs only, not on how it sounds.

Price-band value
Like Overall value, but each soundbar is compared only with soundbars in its own price band: up to $300, $300–500, $500–800, $800–1,200 or over $1,200. 100 is the best deal in that band. Based on specs only, not on how it sounds.
